Match report - 24/8/09
Bardsey Res 2 - 0 Aberford Albion Res
After an abject display at Wetherby the reserve side bounced back with an emphatic defeat of a strong Aberford Albion side.
Aberford started the match strongly and quickly got into their stride, causing some early problems for our new defensive formation, with Ian Stead and George Corcoran playing together for the first time. Once the early misunderstandings were sorted out there was only one team that was going to win the match.
For all the Aberford posession there was never any real threat to the Bardsey goal and mid way into the half the home team started to assert their quality. Justin Gilmore,Wes Freeman ,Lee Womersley and Josh Yanac took control of midfield and it was only a matter of time before Yanac played a superb through ball which was latched onto by Tom Goldie who struck an unstoppable shot from 20 yards low to the goalkeepers right.
It was 'more of the same' after half-time and James Fryer was denied by a bad 'bobble' having beaten four defenders. For all the Bardsey posession the game was still finely balanced until Gilmore scored with a curling shot from 25 yards into the top left hand corner to make the game safe. Jon Ripton replaced Yanac who had worked tirelessly and Calem Connolly replaced Goldie. Despite late pressure the defence stood firm and the game ended with a well deserved win for the home side.
Particularly pleasing for the manager was the clean sheet and credit goes to the back four of Hopton,Corcoran,Stead and Kelliher and of course the goalkeeper James Hardwick .

ROBIN HOOD ATHLETIC 2 V 2 BARDSEY 12/9/09
A depleted Bardsey Reserve team took what may eventually prove to be a good point in a scrappy encounter at Wakefield Road.
Starting with just 11 men to to injuries and suspensions the manager was left with few options and no reserves.
Bardsey however started the game much the brighter of the two teams and the home team gave away a penalty due to a handball under pressure which was tucked away into the corner of the net by GILMORE. Bardsey continued to press and the home team were limited to very few clear cut chances and it was no real surprise when GOLDIE doubled the advantage after beating the keeper with a headed goal.
However our concentration started to slip and a breakthrough from midfield allowed Robin Hood to pull a goal back just before half-time.
The second half had barely begun when Goldie retired with a knee injury and Bardsey were left with 10 men.The heat and size of the pitch started to take its toll and the home team having substitutes to replace tired players were always going to finish the stronger. The pressure finally told with about 10 minutes remaining when Robin Hood scored with a 'toe-poke' when the Bardsey defence failed to close the danger down quickly enough. The rest of the game was really down to hard toil and graft and making sure that we kept the point we had.On a corner count Bardsey outscored Robin Hood by a factor of three to one but we couldn't convert them into goals when it mattered.
As players return from injury and suspension the team will vastly improve. Words out of place to a referee last May have had repercussions four months later and we need to learn from this.
Special mention must go the Streak for his tireless performance and use of the ball.

Heckmondwike Town 0 v 6 Bardsey
After the previouse weeks debacle against Whitkirk Wanderers in which Bardsey were beaten 5-0 the management took the opportunity to make changes for the trip to Heckmondwike where a gale force wind threatened to make life difficult for at least one of the halfs.
However it was not to be as Bardsey playing into the wind quickly went three goals up through Cooney,Walsh and Gilmore. Hardwick playing up front was causing all sorts of problems before going down like a shot Rhino and was replaced by his equivalent Conway who was making a welcome return until he also had to retire.
Three goals to nil at half time flattered the home team who at times struggled to get out of their own half even with an 80mph wind behind them. After the break it was more of the same with Bardsey enjoying long periods of possession and Simpson in the Bardsey goal reduced to almost a spectator. Three goals followed from Streak,Yanac and Corcoran without any credible threats to the Bardsey clean sheet whatsoever. It's unusual at this level to see a manager who is relieved he has only been beaten 6-0 at home.
We can only beat the teams that are put in front of us so 6-0 in windy conditions has to be seen as a good result. A stiffer test must surely be awaiting at Kirk Deighton on Saturday but with a strong squad we must surely go into the game with confidence without taking anything for granted.

got to half-time with their slender lead intact.Bardsey returned to league action on Saturday against a Horbury team who had started the day in the top six. Despite pre-match warnings from the manager regarding recent poor starts, Bardsey were still caught cold going 1-0 down to to elementary mistakes and poor marking. After the initial hiccup it was all Bardsey with BIRD and WALSH(7) pulling the strings in mid-field. Chances came thick and fast and went begging at the same speed and somehow Horbury
The managers half-time team talk consisted of 'lets have more of the same(minus the misses) and the goals will surely come. However 20 minutes into the second half and still no goals the crowd could sense the managers anxiety and all moved around to the other side of the pitch. With time running out he made a truly bold decision to enter three players at the same time.LEDGER CLARK and COONEY entered the fray and with STREAK moving inside fresh impetus was added to the mid-field. A goal followed almost immediately but from an unexpected source with KELLIHER thundering a header against the bar and COONEY poaching the rebound from close range. This seemed to knock the stuffing out of Horbury as theyhad looked to be getting some belief they could hold on for a win. CLARK and Fryer added two more goals to ensure a well deserved win. However(the sermon) we should take heed that sloppy starts and poor finishing could have cost us and despite dominating the play we do not have an automatic right to win. We have to tighten up from the start and maintain concentration for the whole 90 minutes.

Leeds City (0) v (3) Bardsey
Bardsey Line up: (1-1-3-4-2) Simpson, Mannion, Ledger, Nesry, Kelliher, Gilmore, Streak, Walsh(14), Clark, Yanac, Goldie,
Subs: Hardwick (70) Clayton, Bowes, Ripton,Corcoran.
Bardsey travelled to Leeds City on Saturday knowing it would not be the relatively easy game the league positions might suggest as a very young Leeds team are quite capable of beating any team not giving them the respect their technical ability deserves.
Their commitment to attack made for a very open game which suited the spectators but does nothing for the managers blood pressure. The game started evenly with chances going begging at both ends with both keepers pulling off some good saves. SIMPSON was his usual calm and collected self and had saved two almost certain goals by the half hour mark before GOLDIE latched on to a through ball to fire a low shot into the bottom corner to send his dad(Crocodile Dundee),who was still giving him grief for his earlier miss, into ruptures.
Half-time came with Bardsey very much in the ascendancy and the message was to take the game by the scruff of the neck and impose ourselves on the opposition who were starting to look a little jaded. Good? work by YANAC down the left gave LEDGER space to move inside a fire an unstoppable 30 yard thunderbolt which although the keeper saw coming from a long way out, could do nothing to stop. Not long after with Leeds still reeling and complaining to the referee CLARK cleverly worked his way back from an off-side position to pick up the ball in an on-side position to hold off the opposition center-half in a Torres like way to finish cleverly for Bardseys third and final goal. Job done and the Manager retired to his baked potato and beans in the club house. In fact the only downside of the day was on returning to the club he found that the first team had overcatered on the sausages and there were several left uneaten. However even that couldn't detract from his demeanour and a 'Lager-Fest' duly commenced.
