Goals galore.

Bardsey Juniors U16’s     9         Leeds Maccabi  U16’s     5

Bardsey and Leeds Maccabi had played two very tight games last season with nothing much between the teams, so this was going to be a good test for Bardsey. However no-one could have imagined the way this game was going to turn out.

The game started as any other with both sides trying to settle down into a rhythm and get their passing game going. Bardsey were first to strike when the a cross from Joe  Mann was headed in by Rawnsley in the 19th minute. Bardsey were still celebrating when Leeds Maccabi hit the equaliser a minute later. It took only a further 8 minutes before Bardsey retook the lead when a pass from Decker was finished by Al-Moozany chipping the advancing Maccabi keeper. On 33 minutes Rawnsley hit the post as Bardsey continued to apply pressure on the Leeds Maccabi goal. On the stroke of half time Al-Moozany scored his second goal to give Bardsey a 3 – 1 half time lead.

It would be fair to say that neither defence was on top in the second half and that both sides took full advantage of it. As far as Bardsey were concerned, yes there were one or two goals given away to Maccabi, even one howler from a corner, but in the context of the game, lapses in concentration were inevitable. On the plus side the Bardsey attack reeked havoc in the Maccabi defence with Al-Moozany causing all sorts of problems for the defenders.

In the 11th minute of the second half Maccabi brought the score back to 3 -2 but that was the last time they would get within one goal of Bardsey. Rawnsley added his second and Bardsey’s fourth in the 14th minute and then came the goal fest.

Further goals were added in the 17th, 22nd, 25th, 27th, 34th, 36th, 41st and 47th minutes, with Maccabi scoring the last goal to make the final score

Bardsey 9 Leeds Maccabi 5.

During the melee that was the second half Al-Moozany completed his hat-trick and went on to score a fourth. There were also goals for Urquhart, Foster and Houlding who scored on his Bardsey debut coolly slotting in the rebound after his first effort clattered against the post.

There were a few things from this game that would rather be forgotten but there were many things from this game worth remembering.

Bardsey go top!

Bardsey Juniors U16’s     4         Guiseley White U16’s     2

OK so the position in the league may be a bit skewed due to the number of games teams have or haven’t played but this observer makes absolutely no apology for using the headline.

Bardsey had to make some positional changes within the team due to illness and injury reducing the squad to just twelve for this top of the table clash with Guiseley White.

Tom Mann played even though he was feeling unwell and it paid dividends in the 11th minute when he volleyed home the first goal from a corner. The first half was a very even affair with both sides creating a few chances but neither side being able to add to the score before half time. Ten minutes before half time Bardsey were reduced to ten men when Wainman had to be substituted due to an injury and Tom Mann succumbed to his illness and needed some off the field attention. This meant yet more positional changes within the team.

With Bardsey restored to eleven men, the first 20 minutes of the second half continued in the same vein with both teams unable to convert the few chances they were making. But in the 20th minute Rawnsley headed Bardsey’s second goal and gradually Bardsey were starting to take control of the game. Bardsey added a third goal in the 29th minute when Rawnsley’s pass was crashed into the net from the edge of the penalty area by Houlding. Two minutes later Guiseley pulled a goal back from a corner that Bardsey were unable to clear effectively and the ball was poked over the line from close range. In the 38th minute Urquhart played a through ball to Al-Moozany who was tripped by the Guiseley goalkeeper as he tried to go around him. Rawnsley stepped up to hit home the ensuing penalty to give Bardsey a 4 – 1 lead. In the last minute of the game Guiseley scored their second goal with a mirror image of their first, a corner not effectively cleared and the ball eventually ending up in the Bardsey net after a period of pinball in the penalty area.

This result was another step on the ladder of improvement. With players adapting and playing out of their normal positions, 12 players playing as a team supporting and encouraging each other and producing a hard earned victory over strong opposition.

Bardsey may have played more games than those teams below them in the league, but they are also top of the league on merit.

A battling defeat.

Whinmoor U16’s      3      Bardsey U16’s      2

Due to the adverse weather this was the first game for either team since the 13th December last year. It was expected to be a test of how much Bardsey had improved over the last two seasons as Whinmoor are one of the better teams in the league.

The lack of game time showed very early with Bardsey and they struggled to get a foothold in the game. The first ten minutes or so were played exclusively in the Bardsey half with the midfield unable to get into the game. Bardsey found it difficult to keep possession and create anything for the two front men. The Bardsey defence was under siege and eventually succumbed to allow Whinmoor their first goal, with a second following shortly after. In the past this was the time that the Bardsey team would capitulate, but this team is made of stronger stuff now and gradually they clawed their way back into the game. Al-Moozany and Houlding were starting to get better service and on the 28th minute Houlding scored the first goal for Bardsey. It remained 2 – 1 at half time and although they had ridden their luck Bardsey were still in the game.

The second half started in the same way as the first half had with Whinmoor applying the pressure and Bardsey on the back foot. The Bardsey defence got itself into a tangle and Whinmoor took their chance to go 3 – 1 ahead, game over some may have thought and indeed Bardsey started to look a beaten side. However in the 25th minute Al-Moozany beat the defender and crossed for Houlding to chip the ball over the stranded keeper. Not game over, more game on!

The final 15 minutes of the game were a more even contest and both sides could have scored more goals. The defences were tiring on the energy sapping pitch but neither side could convert the chances they made. At the final whistle Whinmoor had just shaded it by one goal and that probably was a fair result.

It is disappointing to start 2010 with a defeat but it wasn’t all bad. Silly errors gifted Whinmoor with two goals and it took a long time for the team to settle. This is down to the lack of actual game time, something that cannot be replicated in training sessions. Bardsey can put those mistakes right and be stronger in their next fixture.

A return to winning ways.

Leeds Maccabi U16’s      2      Bardsey U16’s      4

The weather has continued to plague this season and nearly made this match another casualty. The planned 10am kick off had to be delayed 45 minutes to allow the sun to defrost the pitch. This was a difficult surface that would continue to change throughout the match.

At the kick off the surface was still quite firm and this caused some uneven and unexpected bounces of the ball. Bardsey created a few openings but the shooting boots were missing and shots were being placed tamely wide of the target. At the other end of the pitch the Bardsey defence was unlocked half way through the first half and a good finish from the edge of the area gave Maccabi the lead. Bardsey continued to apply the pressure in an effort to grab an equaliser and although chances were being made they were not being taken. In the final few minutes of the first half a Bardsey corner produced their first goal as Hughes’ shot was parried by the keeper and Houlding stepped up to hit home the rebound. 1 – 1 at half time.

Throughout the first half the top surface had continued to thaw and the pitch had become very heavy and sticky, also Bardsey were now playing on a slight up slope, it was going to be a tough second half. But the team rose to the challenge and played some good football resulting in a further three goals being added to the score sheet at regular intervals. Houlding scored his second to give Bardsey the lead and continue his scoring streak. As the latest addition to the team he has settled in quickly and is in a rich vein of form. Bardseys third goal was a real collectors item when Decker finished a solo effort with a left foot shot from an acute angle into the bottom corner of the net, a goal with the leg he normally just stands on! Goodwin added the fourth when he finished off another good passage of play from the Bardsey team.

Maccabi were finding it difficult to find a way past a very tight defence but with nine minutes left they managed to grab a second goal. That would be their last chance of the game as the Bardsey defence took control once again to see the team through to a 4 – 2 win. This was very much a team effort with the whole squad being involved at some stage during the match. Even with the substitutions there were some very tired legs at the end of the game but the effort had been worth it.

A solid team performance.

Cookridge U16’s      0      Bardsey U16’s      5

This was a harder fought win than the score would suggest, with the elements playing a part but also because Cookridge are a much improved team. A strong cross wind and a pitch that had an uneven bounce made controlling the ball more difficult than normal. However, Bardsey started with a good tempo and applied pressure from the outset. For the first 30 minutes Bardsey had the vast majority of the possession and were playing most of the game in the Cookridge half but they were finding it difficult to apply the finishing touch and get the ball in the net. Was it going to be one of those days? On the 33rd minute Houlding finally managed to head home from close range and some of the frustration lifted from the team. Although the first half was not all one way traffic McGonagle in the Bardsey goal had hardly had a save to make.

The second half was a repeat of the first with Bardsey applying more pressure but finding the Cookridge defence hard to break down. In the 18th minute Rawnsley was pushed over in the box and calmly slotted home the penalty even though he had to retake it due to encroachment on his first attempt. Cookridge were still showing stubborn defence and it wasn’t until the 30th minute when a lovely flowing move from the Bardsey team was finished by Rawnsley chipping the keeper. Straight from the Cookridge kick off they conceded possession which Bardsey took advantage of by scoring again within a minute, this time it was Houlding grabbing his second. The Cookridge resistance was finally broken and Houlding added his third and Bardsey’s fifth on 35 minutes. Beddard had taken over from McGonagle in goal for the second half and he too had had a fairly comfortable afternoon with the Bardsey defence putting in a good performance.

By no means was this a spectacle of flowing football it was a tough scrap where you had to earn your goals. That said Bardsey did earn their goals with solid endeavour and even managed to put together two excellent passages of play to produce two of the goals.

Hard fought win.

Bardsey U16’s      2      Pannal Sports Panthers     0

After the disappointment of last Sunday’s draw the Bardsey team were in the mood to get that winning feeling back. The compactness of the Nidd pitch was replaced by the wide open spaces of the Bardsey field and the team made good use of the extra acreage.
Bardsey started well and were quickly applying pressure on the Pannal defence without producing the elusive shot on target. Bardsey’s passing game, sadly missing in the last outing, returned with the whole team putting together some excellent passing moves down both flanks. Bardsey were shading the possession and territorial advantage but Pannal were always a danger and the Bardsey defence needed to be alert at all times. After 23 minutes Goodwin scored to give Bardsey a deserved lead but this game was by no means over. For the rest of the first half the game flowed from end to end with Bardsey having the better chances but Pannal still produced threats on the Bardsey goal.
The start of the second half was a much better period for Pannal as they applied pressure on the Bardsey defence and started to create more chances. Bardsey were slow starters but gradually managed to increase their influence over the game and started to create some chances of their own. The second half was a catalogue of missed opportunities by both sides. The Bardsey defence was put under pressure at times and Bagshaw cleared off the line on one occasion, but the goal held firm. At the other end Bardsey were creating openings but were unable to get that second goal, the shooting boots had definitely been left at home as at least two golden opportunities were spurned. It took 27 minutes before Goodwin added his and Bardsey’s second to the score sheet but even then Pannal still refused to let the game go and continued to contest the game right to the final whistle. The Bardsey defence held firm and would not give up that clean sheet whilst at the other end, although they tried, they could not add to their two goal tally.
This was a game played in the best of spirits by both sides, there were very few fouls, allowing the game to flow freely. The win really was a squad effort with all 14 players trying their hardest to give Bardsey the victory. After the harshness of the winter months and a series of soggy pitches, it was interesting to hear the players complain about the hard ground, blisters and aching feet! There must be a perfect surface out there somewhere.

Sunday 25th April 2010

A narrow win to end the season.

Bardsey U16’s      1      Cookridge Albion U16’s     0

This was the last game of the season and Bardsey wanted to finish with a win, however, Cookridge were in no mood to hand that victory over on a plate.
Bardsey were made to work hard for their final three points by a Cookridge team playing as well as they did in the first half of the last game Bardsey played against them. In the first half of this game Bardsey played well in patches but could not turn any of their pressure into goals. Cookridge were having their fair share of possession but, as with Bardsey, they could not create any clear cut chances. Although Bardsey shaded the first half in terms of possession and pressure it finished goalless.
The second half started well for Bardsey and they were awarded a penalty after ten minutes sadly the spot kick was high, wide and not particularly handsome (note to coaches – penalty practice required). As in the first half Bardsey were playing well in patches and putting the Cookridge defence under pressure but were unable to produce a clinical finish to any of their moves. Most of the efforts were trickling tamely into the keeper’s grateful arms. At the other end McGonagle was cleaning up any loose ball behind a solid Bardsey defence which were on their way to another clean sheet. After 25 minutes of the second half Decker finally broke the deadlock when he ran around the Cookridge defence and managed to convert a Bardsey corner. The final fifteen minutes produced more Bardsey pressure but they were still unable to add to their goal tally. Foster came closest when his long range effort forced a good save from the Cookridge keeper who parried the vicious shot onto the bar and out for a corner. This was an ugly win but a win nonetheless and all fourteen players played their part in digging out the result.
The result was a satisfying end to an excellent season by this group of players. The final tally was played 12, won 7, drawn 3, lost (only) 2 with a goal difference of +15. In contrast to last season when they lost 12 out of 18 games and ended up with a goal difference of minus 20, it shows just how much the team has improved. Games still to be played could affect where Bardsey finish in the league but presently they hold the second spot. Regardless of where they finish in the league everyone involved with this football team can feel proud of their achievements this season.
