KNARESBOROUGH TOWN (1) v (2) BARDSEY

11-9-10 at Manse Lane

One of the great Bardsey performances of recent years saw a 9 man Bardsey team come from behind to beat the league pretenders 2-1 on their home ground. Prior to the game the talk within the Knaresborough camp was when and not if they would win the league and the music coming from the home changing was more like 'Last night of the proms' than a prequel to a match that could have a large bearing on the championship come next May.Bardsey missing several major squad members due to work commitments and injury still managed to field a strong team due to our strength in depth.

Smith in goal with Ryder Mills(Michael) Brooker and Harrison(back from suspension) formed a defence which had only conceded a goal every two and a half hours up to this game but Knaresborough were thought to be a very different proposition to previous opponents and a hard game was anticipated.

A midfield of Bingley Longfellow Thomson and Freeman are as good a combination as any  and would grace higher leagues than ours. With new signing Wetherald up front with Toney, anticipation tempered with caution was the mood in the Bardsey dug-out.

The initial stages of te game were basically two good teams cancelling each other out with Bardsey possibly shading it but a Longfellow(calf)

injury and then Bingley(groin) within quick succession altered the bardsey momentum and Knaresborough came more into the game. Miller who had replaced Longfellow tried to kneecap the Knaresborough number 4 with his head and was quite rightly sent off with the Bardsey manager actually agreeing with a referee. We got to half time with the score remaining at 0-0 and regrouped in the changing rooms for a half time team talk which seemed to do the trick as Bardsey  again began brightly and belied the fact we had only ten men.

Then followed one of those moments which only the referee understood because nobody else in the ground did. Wetherald went to challenge for a ball against the center-half and using his arm to balance seemed to have won the ball fairly. The referee however saw things differently and dismissed him much to the amazement of everyone except himself. Bardsey were left with a mountain to climb and when we went 1-0 down to a defensive error from a set piece  it seemed we were on a damage limitation excercise. The Bardsey players however had other ideas and with Thomson Freeman and Egan doing an extra shift in mid-field Knaresborough were struggling to make the advantage pay and with 10 minutes to go the Bardsey decided to play the Joker(Dicko) in the hope of maybe gaining a point. This introduction changed the mood of the game and within minutes a goalmouth scramble led to Thomson equalising and Bardsey looked to be heading for a point before a pass from Dickinson left Toney in space and he finished perfectly with a low drive to the goalkeepers left to seal a famous victory. EIGHT minutes of overtime followed which seemed more like eighty before the final whistle sent the Bardsey travelling faithfull into a celebration which lasted well into the night.
